Trying to figure out which hard drives to get for a cheap NAS storage box. This is for a non profit so cost is a huge factor. The storage doesn't need to be high just about 1TB. The total drive cost needs to stay under $120 for two drives. Lots of customer documents so need something reliable.

Hey there, Spankymcbob1!

Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the prices of the products. However, I'd strongly recommend you to consider buying RAID/NAS-specific hard drives. They are specifically designed to withstand the workflow and the 24/7 environment of a NAS enclosure. Such HDDs incorporate a specific firmware and optimized features that improve the compatibility and reliability of the drives.
If interested, you can check out the WD Red drives here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=66BjIj
Under compatibility, you can see what other WD drives are compatible with your NAS enclosure model.

Hope this was helpful. Keep me posted if you have more questions regarding the storage configuration! :)

Hey there again, Spankymcbob1!

No, unfortunately, it doesn't. Western Digital Company does not provide any kind of data recovery service. The best thing you can do about your data is to have at least 1 other copy of it stored somewhere else, in order to be able to prevent the potential data-loss headaches.
The best thing we can do for you, if you accidentally lose it, is to refer you to one of our Data Recovery Partners worldwide ( http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=pfm9nf ).
You can also check more about the warranty policy here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ATAM0v

Hope it helps. Keep me posted if there are more questions! :)

WD Green drives are the standard. Get two for RAID 1 and probably 2TB drives as they are much more. Also I would consider building your own small build and running FreeNAS or some other sort of Linux. A good build could save you money while offering better performance if you do it right.

I'll look into the Toshiba drive. But I'm against building one because I can't really see the reason for it. The Netgear I picked out has a nice web UI that is very easy to understand. This is going to be used by mostly older people with very little technical knowledge.
