What Are Some Compatibility Issues with PC Games in Windows 8?

As per various statistics and tests, it is known that Windows 8 is better as compared to Windows 7 when it comes to speed, booting time, shutdown time, and other performance aspects. However, the results for gaming in Windows 8 are not that satisfactory.

In laptop computers or desktop PCs, if an additional graphics card is installed, the only compatibility issue that may arise is unavailability of device drivers for Windows 8. After the release of Windows 8 on October 26, 2012, most vendors have already developed the graphics card drivers that are compatible with this latest OS. Vendors who have not yet developed the drivers are already on their way to do so in order to make their spaces in the competitive market.

Since the architecture of Windows 8 has just a minor difference than that of Windows 7, it is unlikely that the games that easily run on Windows 7 would fail to execute on Windows 8. Even though if this happens, like earlier versions of Windows, Windows 8 also allows users to run applications in compatibility mode. Considering this, the executable files of the incompatible games can be executed in the environments of earlier versions of Windows, i.e. Windows 7 using compatibility mode.

How to Run an Application in Compatibility Mode?

In order to run any application, including the games, in compatibility mode, step-by-step instructions given below must be followed:

■Log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator or standard user account on which the application is to be run in compatibility mode.
■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop window.
■Once on the desktop screen, click File Explorer icon from the taskbar.
■From Libraries window, navigate and locate the executable file (.exe) of the application or game that is to be run in compatibility mode.
■Once located, right-click the executable file. Alternatively shortcut icon of the application can also be right-clicked to run the application in compatibility mode.
■From the context menu that appears, click Properties.
■On the opened properties box, go to Compatibility tab.
■On the selected tab, under Compatibility mode section, check Run this program in compatibility mode for checkbox.
