what are some good CPUs and GPUs for video rendering?

A friend of mine is willing to help pay for my new rig under the condition that he can use it for video rendering, editing, and recording the lets plays. What are some good GPUs and/or CPUs or whatever else I may need that are good for these I haven't the slightest Idea how any of that stuff works so any additional upgrade idea's are greatly appreciated.

It depends what software you're using. They would usually suggest the best video cards for the software. I wouldn't worry too much about the processor. When choosing a video card for rendering be wise, remember that workstation video cards are much more expensive than video game video cards, and even though they might look less powerful, the have better support, thus their drivers are much better and will make a big difference.
