what are the 8 pins for on this 1TB sata hard drive?

I know how to hook up the sata cables but wondered if i need to plug something into the 8 pins on back of the hard drive? If not, what are they for?

No, you don't need to connect anything to the 8pin. Those are actually jumpers, but leave it without a jumper for default.
