What are the benefits of a 144 hz monitor?

So I was planning on getting either the Asus VG248QE or the Asus MG248Q until i saw the
Acer G257HU. The Acer G257HU is cheaper than both the asus monitors and plus its 1440p. The only thing is that it's refresh rate is 60hz while both the asus monitors are 144 hz. So should i go with the acer or one of the asus monitors?

From what I understand it looks great in Windows, smoother everything. But unless your have an absolute beast of a rig it will be wasted in gaming. There's only a couple cards (probably sli/CrossfireX) that can push 144 fps in anything newish at high/ultimate. Monitor choices really come down to use case and personal preference. For example I play mostly RPG's and one MMO, things like fps over 60 and "Oh no Vsync causes input lag!" are meaningless to me. If you play CS:GO or competitive shooters though, maybe 144Hz is up your alley. BTW I have two of those Acers and they are %$&#ing gorgeous.

I have a GTX 1080...it sings at 1440p. FFXIV brings it to it's knees from time to time but that's a fringe case and only in certain locales. TBH this whole generation of cards seems...in between popular resolutions. Nothing matches up nicely and it's hard to make a recommendation that is either not quite or barely enough performance, or grossly overpowered. Any advise from a 1070 owner on 1440 performance would be greatly appreciated

I have a GTX1070 on a 1440p/144Hz display. I feel it is the perfect card for it.
It actually runs FPS games on 120-144FPS and AAA titles on 60+ FPS (and I have Gsync with help smooth any sudden drops in games like WOW.

all my games are on the highest settings. except MSAA or any form of Anti-Aliasing which are usually x2 or x4 since not much is needed for 1440p.

check the Asus PG248Q in your region, it has Gsync (although you might not need it with a 1070 @1080p)

wow 450 dollars. Thats pretty expensive. I was looking between the 200 - 250 dollar range. Thats why i asked about the asus vg248qe, mg248q, and asus g257hu.

The problem with adding Gsync to the equation, at least for me was that I may as well keep my current screen and flog it to death with a GTX 1080 for the price point. Gsync is great but will be a no start for the majority until it is at mainstream pricing (max $20-$30 more than non-Gsync). As far as the use of AA it depends on the title in terms of performance impact. I still use it in many (not all) titles I play as I'm rather picky that way, though I suppose again it depends on the title. Cut scene heavy and games laden with time spent "in world" rather than in battle tend to make my eyes wander to those filthy jaggies. In battle I'm too busy...battling..to notice. Different strokes.
