I am getting a ssd for the first time and not very educated in it. What are the factors I should consider before buying a new or used ssd?

I would not look at a used SSD.
under 240GB is a deal breaker, smaller drives are slower than the 240gb and above.
even a cheapo SSD will trounce an expensive HDD as far as speed.
my windows install is running on the 480GB version of this

You can view and use ASSD to see the speed, as long as the speed is not a problem. It's not easy to break down.
