Hi, this might be a bit of a stupid question but I take it that a ddr3 processor cannot support a ddr4 ram? Please explain how CPU's and Motherboards work with RAM and Storage? Here are my specs 17-4790k CPU, 8GB ddr3 ram, 120gb SSD storage.
What are the parts I would need to upgrade if I want to get 32gb ddr4 ram and 1TB SSD storage? I'm kind of new to CPU's and motherboards so don't judge me.
Why won't my current CPU support ddr4?

No judgements here my friend, we all start somewhere!

ddr3 processor cannot support a ddr4 ram?
Correct. The chipset isn't made for DDR4.

Storage doesn't matter. Just new motherboards will now ALSO almost always have M2 capabilities now. Which is an additional format that you can use for storage.

DDR4 is currently the main RAM on the market, but will be DDR5 soon enough. You need a chipset that supports DDR4 RAM in order to use it, they are not reverse compatible in any way.

You'd need to upgrade the CPU, Motherboard, and obviously the RAM. Storage doesn't matter at all and is cross compatible. But with a new motherboard you'll be able to get a 1TB M2 SSD instead to save on cables.

Why won't my current CPU support ddr4?
Because RAM generations are not backwards compatible. Your CPU is made for DDR3 chipsets, not DDR4. It would be the same as putting a PS4 game disc into a PS1, the PS1 just wouldn't know what to do with it as it's not physically built or programmed to do so. (and in RAM, you wouldn't be able to insert it anyway).

Solution
each RAM has different amounts of contacts/electrical pinouts and thus they cannot be interchanged.
the CPU contains the memory controller and with a very few exceptions is made for one type of memory.

because of these reasons the motherboard, CPU and RAM must all be made to work with each other.

Thanks a lot for your answer. that was very helpful!

Your motherboard is made for DDR3 memory so DDR4 will not fit. It all depends on the motherboard / processor.
Their no motherboards that support your processor that can use DDR4.

You would need a new processor, motherboard, and the DDR4 memory to upgrade. The 1TB SSD would be just to buy one.

Don't get to high up on upgrading just to use DDR4 memory it took them a good bit of time after it was released to beat my DDR3 2400mhz with 11 cas.
