I have a few ports on the back of my 8200 that I'm not sure what their purpose
is. The documention I have looked at does not seem to help. Does anyone know
of anything that sort of gives you a "map" - so that you know that this thing
in the middle that looks like this is for that?

Thanks.

Thanks, but there is a whole bunch of other stuff which the picture even
suggests but does not identify - in the mid to lower part of the back panel. I
seem to have more things than are shown on the picture.

They must be add-on cards. If you can't identify what they are, go to device
manager and have a look. They may be a NIC, a video card, a modem, etc.

It is still hard to figure out what's what. I guess there is no reference -
the yellow one that looks like this is that.

For example, my line in/out and mike jacks seem to be on the bottom row. There
is also a yellow jack and black jack of the same type that I don't know what
they are for. There is also another yellow multipin female port a little
bigger than a serial port on that same row. I don't know what that is for. On
the next row up is my modem plug. Plus an extra place to plug a phone line,
Not sure what that is for. Next row up has another phone jack that I don't
know what to do with. Next row up has two video connectors + something that
looks like a round mouse connector between them. I don't know what that is
either.

OK, here you go.

Might not be exactly right, but I think so.

On the bottom row, black is usually center channel for rear speakers. Yellow
is usuall SPDIF, which is a digital output for sound. If you don't know then
likely you don't need them. The 'almost a modem plug' is a Game port, for
connection to a Joystick or Gamepad.

The phone plug next to tthe phone plug is to connect a telephone, so you can
have a telephone on the same line.

The next row up that looks like a phone cord is likely slightly larger, with
8 connections. This should be your LAN connection. If you're using dial-up,
you don't need it, but will when you eventually go Broadbankd.

The next row up with two video connectors is just that. Your video card
supports two monitors OR if one is slightly larger and white, then your
video card supports a digital output for an LCD panel. Depending on the
model, it may or may not support two at a time. The round connector is an
s-video output to connect to a high end TV. You can connect it at the same
time and show your PC or DVD videos on your TV.

I think that is it.

Thanks a lot Tom! I will definetly save that. One last thing. On the bottom
row - on the opposide side from the audio jacks there is a yellow female jack
that seems somewhere in size between a parallel port and a serial port. I have
no idea what that is for either.

Thanks again.

Is it on the same card as the sound jacks? If so, that's the game port.

I'm not sure if I can tell without opening up the PC. Which is probably not a
good idea. There is no obvious break but the back cover does cover things up.

Posta link to a digital picture of the back and I'll name them all.

Archived from groups: alt.sys.pc-clone.dell (More info?)

Looking at the system information it says I'm supposed to have a Creative
SoundBlaster Live Gameport at PCI slot 3. I don't know what PCI slot 3 is,
but since you have identified everything else I assume it is a pretty good bet
that the remaining item is the gameport, as you speculated.
