What are trophies and points?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask, I'm new here and just wondered what the trophies and points are for? Also, is there a forum FAQ explaining the basic principles like this? I can't find one.

Oddly, no one had ever asked that question until now, and yet it seems so obvious now you have

short version
Trophies are a reward for actions - each trophy level rewards trophy points.

There should be a way to see how many Best answers you have in each trophy but there is currently an unknown bug that has killed the charts that show your scores. I wish I had an answer as to when it will be fixed, but its one of my bugbears.

I must admit that I still don't really understand the point of these things, but I assume they have a valid purpose or they wouldn't be here, so I will just ignore this feature of the forum as it doesn't seem particularly important. Thanks again
