Solution
What are your priorities?

EVGA has good cooling and overclock potential while maintaining reference size cooler. This is best for smaller cases. Does not include a backplate. Early versions only had 2 of 3 heat pipes touching the GPU core. If you get EVGA, get the newer SSC, as they fixed the problem on this model.

ASUS and MSI are slightly larger coolers, and also good overclockers. Works with most small cases but slightly larger than reference.

Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 has a LARGE cooler, but also very low temps, very low noise, and very good overclocking. Includes a backplate, although it does not touch the backside RAM for cooling. I fixed this by adding thermal pads...

ASUS STRIX, MSI Twin Frozr and Gigabyte G1 are the way to go. Why?

ASUS: The quietest of the lot. Has good out of the box cooling and a high-ish base clock. Has had some issues with coil whine though.

MSI: A bit louder than the ASUS but still manageable. Runs cooler at higher clock speeds. High out of the box clock and great overclocking potential.

Gigabyte G1: Very high stock clock speed, runs cool and quiet, the highest overclocking potential of all 970s
