I bought the Samsung 840 EVO SSD but it came with nothing but the SSD and a CD. It says you need a SSD to USB adapter things and I need a cable to connect it to the motherboard. What kind of cable do I need.

Solution

SATA I - 1.5Gbps
SATA II - 3Gbps
SATA III - 6Gbps

That is the interface.
The actual SATA cable does not matter. Wire is wire.
I just want to put the OS on the SSD. The problem is that I have a pre-built system and the OS is on a HDD. They did give me a windows 7 disk but I don't know if it is the OS install disk.

You can buy SATA data cables anywhere. Amazon, monoprice.com, Newegg.

Now....as to the new SSD:
What size is it?
What size is the old drive and how space is used on it?

I always recommend a clean install on a new SSD. Far, far fewer problems.

The SSD size is 250gb. My current HDD setup is unknown to me. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to storage. Is there a way to find out?

One way to find out the size of the HDD is to open Windows Explorer, right click on the drive and then click on Properties. You will then be able to see the capacity of the drive.

Another way is to click on Start, type diskmgmt.msc in the search box and press Enter. You will be able to see the drive's capacity in Disk Management.
