Question what cable should i use to connect my 144hz monitor to my 60hz laptop for full performance?

I have a Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI port, however, if I can't find a cable sufficient enough that works with these ports and need a display-port cable (or any other cable) will an adapter still provide the same performance. (as in a HDMI to Displayport adapter)
