Fixing Up My Gaming Desktop

I have a low end desktop and I’m thinking of building a new one with the same video card, ssd, and cpu. I’ll probably change the video card and cpu when I can afford it. My budget is $500. I’m using the desktop for 1080p gaming, 2d maybe 3d animation, video editing, and programming.

I have a non modular power supply from an old pre-build I brought which really needs to be changed.

If your gaming at 1080p there are 2 components to look at. Video card and CPU. The 1660Ti is a perfect video card so stick with that. The CPU is also not that bad at a modern Ryzen 5 2600. I would normally only upgrade all 3 motherboard/ram/cpu at once and you have good components for 1080p gaming. I would therefore not be tempted to upgrade anything on the computer. You have an SSD so no need to upgrade in that department. The only component I could see upgrading would be upping your RAM to 16GB if you use any applications that push the limits of your 8GB.

Since you have a pretty decent 1080p machine I would be looking at my peripherals. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, and audio. I am a firm believer in buying absolutely stellar top notch peripherals as they will enhance your enjoyment of the computer much more than any CPU upgrade ever will. And peripherals can last you 10+ years and through several computer upgrades so it's money well spent. Heck even a nice gaming chair can make a world of difference.

Instead of thinking of what you don't have with your computer, look at what you do have. And that is a damn fine 1080p rig. Look at the rest of your setup, peripherals and chair and fix what's lacking. Wait till your system ages a bit more and then do the proper upgrade into Ryzen 7/I7 territory and 1440p gaming. If you really wanted to, upgrading the case isn't so bad as a good case can last you 15+ years so that's not money wasted.
