What can cause the sound on a pc to stop working

what could cause the sound on my computer to stop working. I thought that it could've been the speaker i had so bought some new ones, but its still not working.

Update the drivers. Try the headphone port instead of the back port or vice versa just to see if that makes a difference. Does the OS detect the speakers? These are things to try first.
