Sorry for the long response, the absolute best CPU that your CPU socket supports is a Turion X2 Ultra ZM-88:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Turion_microprocessors#Turion_64_X2 (wikipedia page with all the supported CPUs)
but so far I can only find the ZM-86 model. Here is the ebay page which I found has the lowest prices, most being around $12-$30 surprisingly, but you can search around more and see if you can find a better deal or the 87 or 88 model. Also If you are going to replace it you might need some thermal paste if you don't have any.
If you mean keeping the motherboard and changing the CPU it wouldn't help at all. What is your budget, nobody can or should be able to recommend something without knowing that first. Also what are you using this pc for?

What is the make and model of the laptop? (include model number shown on the label on the bottom)

As mentioned, an upgrade might not get you much, but I can understand wanting to know the options. I updated my Dell laptop from a Intel C2D T7500 to a T9500 and while it's not blazing fast compared to today's laptops, it makes the user experience smoother.
