"mini" PCI-E as PCI-E x1? If so, then you can plug variety of cards into it. Most common ones are: dedicated sound card, internal wi-fi adapter, SATA or USB expansion cards, GPU (runs in one lane of PCI-E).

Without seeing the image of said connector, it's basically guesswork for us to figure out which one you're referring to.

Though, if you mean this one, then this is M.2 slot and usually used for additional storage by M.2 SSD.

Though, to know exactly which connector your laptop has (mini PCI, mini PCI-E or M.2), look it up from your laptop manual.

Oh, when buying mini PCI-E card then make sure you don't buy the M.2 card. While looking similar, M.2 (aka mini PCI-E v2.0) is the next generation and those doesn't fit into mini PCI-E slot.
