All my games usually run at around 60 fps, WoW over 100 fps. Now they are down at 10 fps. The only change i have made is that i removed the CPU cooler without putting on new thermal paste, that cant really be it so what should i do?

My setup:
Geforce GTX 760
Intel core i7-4770 3.4 ghz
8,00 gb ram
windows 7

If you put the cooler back on without paste (ie devoid of paste), then it certainly could be the problem. If it is hitting it's thermal limit, it will throttle the clock down to protect itself. You need to check your CPU temp to see what it is while the CPU is loaded by one of your games.

I put my old cooler back on. And yes it was thermal paste on it but i heard old thermal paste is useless.

Okey so i should put on new thermal paste and it should be fine?

Well overheating is a possibility. I would say if you want to know for sure, use a programs such as HWInfo or AIDA64 to monitor your temperatures while gaming. If your temps are hitting the 80's or above, you are throttling.

Just to be clear though, you removed your heatsink, cleaned all the old paste of it and the CPU heatspreader and then re-installed the heatsink?

I removed the heatsink to clean it from dust. I did not clean the old paste. Then i re-installed it. I read somewhere that the paste gets useless when you separate the heatsink from the CPU. I think i will remove the old paste and put on new. If that aint work, i dont really know what to do.

Okay so i checked up the temperature after having my computer running only 5 mins and world of warcaft running and all the 4 cores was on 85°C and up. No wonder i got lags....

That looks like the problem. When cleaning the old paste, find isopropanol alcohol (99% not 70%), clean the heatspreader on the CPU and on the heatsink. There are many opinions on how best to get it to spread. I use to use the credit card method and spread a thin layer and then mount the heatsink. I have since started to use the pea method. Place a small blob of paste in the center, press the heatsink down firmly while giving it a small twist back and forth (to help press air voids out to the sides) and lock it down.

As for reusing old paste, it's a no no. However it's usually better than nothing. The longer it's been in use, the less it's going to cool when it's reused.

Yeah at 85C you are definitely throttling.

Okay so i removed the old paste and applied new one. Now my computer runs as normal. Thanks so much for the help!
