Hi there

I'm gonna grab myself an i7 8700k and I'm not really updated on the "newer" motherboard chipsets and CPUs.
Can someone please explain the difference between the different 300 number chipsets?
I am planning on overclocking at some point so my primary question is whats the difference between z370 and z390.

Thanks

As the Z390 is the latest chipset, I would just go Z390. There is plenty of choice at all price points and some great motherboards. If overclocking and you should with the 8700K as it overclocks fairly easily and very well, go for something like the Gigabyte Aorus Pro or Elite as they both have a very good 12 phase VRM setup in the mid range or if you want to go higher the Aorus Ultra...but thats just my thoughts..

z370 or z390 but seeing that z370 is becoming quite hard to find or coming near the prices of z390 you might want to get a z390 instead.

you might consider something around the mid range z390 most gigabyte aorus boards are a good start if you plan to overclock for stock almost any z390 should suffice but I personally wont choose the cheapest one.

What is your primary use going to be?
I ask because the similarly priced i7-9700K is a more competent chip and better for gaming.

id agree but the 8700k would be better if in case the OP wants to do more than gaming soon, the 9700k only has 8 physical cores while the 8700k has 12 (6c/12t) (yes 6 of them are still pseudo cores but it still helps) id still personally recommend the 8700k over the 9700k if going intel vs ryzen 3700x for example.
