I was going to get an fx 8350 and a new board but I had to fix my HDD and get a new os. So I have decided to go up CPUs. I currently have an i3 540, I need a CPU good enough for reasonable settings in games and able to render videos etc. My GPU is a Gainward Nvidia GTX 560ti.

What Clarkdale or lynnfield CPU is the best for this?

The best option would be any of the i7 8xx CPUs, which are quad core CPUs with hyperthreading. They will offer the best performance for video rendering. If you want easy overclocking see if you can find the i7 875k, which is the only Lynnfield with an unlocked multiplier. You can still overclock with locked Lynnfield CPUs, but it is a bit more complicated a process compared to just bumping up the multiplier.

I don't think there are too many LGA1156 CPUs still floating around these days, and if you do find one, they may well be priced in such a way that you might as well get a new motherboard and buy a newer CPU.

I know but I am having to fix my pc with the money I had for a mobo and cpu. The money I have left I'm just going to try to get a lga1156. The 860 looks the best price wise as on ebay they go for 50-70 pounds in comparison to the 870 which generally goes for £120. I think thats enough of an upgrade.

Thanks.

Also I probably won't overclock as with my mobo its ridiculously complicated.

And a bit more of a turbo boost by 0.2ghz

Also how much of a step down is the i5 750 when compared to the 860?
