What components would you suggest to upgrade an FX-6300 and R9280?

I'm not going to do it right now, but I've been out of touch with the new releases for quite some time. So, if I wanted a new processor and GPU that were a noticeable improvement from the ones I have now, what would you suggest?

That's part of what I would like to figure out. What would you recommend as the closest tier that's worth upgrading to at all?

I have a 7950/280, the 1060 looks pretty good. The 970 is still a boost but I'm less convinced its worth the money. Even the 1050TI is faster though like the 970 not as much.

As for the CPU nearly anything is gaming wise faster than the 6300. Intel i5 or Ryzen.

Looking at the prices, the RX 470 seems a better option than the 1060, and I think it's entry level VR-worthy, am I right?

It is, though the 480 and 570 would be a better idea if you want to get into VR. The 470 is very basic for VR.

Yes, the 480 looks alright. I think the 1070 would be the perfect entry point for VR, but it is quite a price hike. As for the CPU, the i5 4460 seemed to be the obvious choice for high-end gaming without splashing out too much money. Is it still the case or is there a newer architecture that's more worthwhile?

"high end" would be an i7 with a gtx 1070
