Hi. I have been upgrading my sons PC over Christmas.....

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2458154/cpu-gtx-970.html#14958400

I am thinking of buying a Noctua NH-U9B SE2 Dual 92mm Fan Quiet CPU Cooler S1366/115x/775 AM2/AM2+/AM3/FM1.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Noctua-NH-U9B-SE2-Dual-92mm-Fan-Quiet-CPU-Cooler-S1366-115x-775-AM2-AM2-AM3-FM1-/131290586055?pt=Computing_ComputerComponents_Fans_Heatsinks_SR&hash=item1e91875bc7

As the one supplied with the FX8350 is screaming and I can smell circuit board! It has a really loud wine to it. What are your thoughts on this? And how does the air flow work on this? Are both fans blowing to the middle of the cooler or do they blow same direction straight through? So install with flow directing to the top of the case and not onto the GTX 970!?! Also will it come prepared with thermal paste?

I am also changing the air flow on the case and understand negative preasure in the case. What will be the best way to do this? Front/bottom of the case is a fan pulling air in. Back/top under PSU is pulling out. What should I do with the two on the side of the case? Up/over middle of panel.

Thx in advance. You guys have already been more than helpfull.

AMD FX 8350
MSI GTX 970
M5A78L-M
16G CORSAIR VENGANCE
CORSAIR CX600

+1 to Entomber, the Corsair CX series tend to have the coil whine issue.

Regarding the Noctua, you set both coolers to move the air in the same direction, ideally towards your top case fan so all the hot air gets out of the case.

The product comes with a thermal solution that you will have to apply when placing the heatsink over the CPU.

As for the side fans, the one that gets directly to the GPU I'd set it as intake to give fresh cold air to your GPU, the other one could be set as exhaust to help achieving the negative pressure you want.

Huh!! Cheapo?!? Yea it is defiantly coming from the CPU cooler. When I put my finger on it to slow it down the sound changes/quietens . If ya know what I mean!?!

And I thought it might of been the MSI 970 as people were on about coil whine on those when first released but defiantly the CPU cooler.

Also Noctua has two fans. Will I need or is there an adapter supplied as there is only one connector on the motherboard?

That doesn' sound good! It shouldn't make a noise like that and any hint of a smell is not a good sign.
Not to teach you to suck eggs or anything, but have you confirmed in the BIOS that the temps on all the stuff is fine?

To answer your questions, the CPU fans both blow in the same direction, generally they're setup to blow at the back of the case where the there is no other components that would be effected.

The whole negative vs positive debate is too hard to have a right answer, it comes down to personal preference heh =). Personally, negative is better for me because there is less dust around the front of the computer than the back, so sucking in the front and pushing out the back/top/sides works the best for me - Plus it means you only need to clean the front filter haha laziness =)

Like anything though, experiment with the fans. Check your temps, change the directions etc, and see what works for your environment.

Hi, your son´s pc is a really nice.
You can learn nearly all you need to know about your Case Pressure in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NYHC3DXynM
About the CPU cooler I would recommend getting a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo or if you like you could go with wather cooling (something like an http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cooler-Master-Seidon-120V-Liquid-Cooling-System-1-x-120-PWM-Fan-Blue-LED-/181265835372?pt=UK_Computing_Case_Fans&hash=item2a3449256c) or if you have the budget some kits, you will find everything explaned here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ1p9QbZ9tc
To install your CPU Cooler you will need to buy something like this Artic Clean kit (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arctic-Silver-ArctiClean-Articlean-60ml-Thermal-Artic-CPU-IC-Chip-Cleaner-/400734926681?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item5d4da9b759). The CPU Cooler doesn´t come if the thermal paste, you can watch an unboxing on youtube.
And finally, the cooler isn´t install in the direct your your gpu...

We do have all settings (I think) set to max playing FarCry4. I need to find out how and what temperatures will be normal/acceptable. I have mailed the eBay shop I got the CPU from but no reply. :-(

Regarding the Noctua I gathered it looks as though when fitted the fans would be pointing vertical?

And yes. Good idea about the fans.

My son says thx you Pucky and thx for the info. I will have a good look at that. I am familiar with Arctic Silver as I used it to fix my PS3 and was going to ask if this should be used instead of any pre-installed paste.

No, the CPU fans would be pointing horizontally. Your AMD FX 8350 shouldn't get up much higher than 55ºC.

In my opinion, yes. Go with the thermal paste that you trust.

And if I check the BIOS it tells me highest and lowest temperatures I guess?!? I will check now. And regarding that pre applied paste that was on the 8350 cooler it looked very thick. I thought it had to be applied to the CPU as thin as possible?

Ohhh right so it's screaming under load, not just at rest? Then yes, I would check the temps. As Pucky said, 55 would be an okay temp, I'd say 60 would be my worry moment, depending on your ambient air temp of course.
Other thing to note too, that CPU isn't really the best for gaming, don't get me wrong it works fine, but it's going to grind a bit harder than some of the intel ones which are just better designed to handle what you're throwing at it - Plus AMD do chuff out some heat =)

mmm not really, thermal paste is designed to conduct heat through it, but there is obviously a limit, you don't want it pilled up like wall putty haha.

OK. Checked hardware monitor in the BIOS......

CPU Temperature 47C/116.5F
MB Temperature 34C/93F

I took a photo on of the screen but I see cant post pics!

Is this the rest/idle temperature? I think so. The fan is as should be while on desktop. Think I need to find out how hot it gets while gaming on ultra. Any idea how I will find this info?

And if this cooler didn't have the wine I don't think it would be to bad. I really think it has a fault but have been told stock coolers are not very good anyway and probably a good idea to upgrade.

Those are fine temps - but yes, that will be at rest. Even after cranking a game, the CPU will cooldown within about 20seconds, so it's not easy to go back into the BIOS and check.

There is lots of software (free) that will monitor the health of your system - the graphics card disk will probably have one actually, if not, try your MB disks.

Is it making the noise and smell at rest? - rest = at desktop with nothing but the OS running, just like you said =)

And ahem at stock fans! They get the job done in the ideal environment, but any variations and they fall short!

No it is fine on desktop. Will check the card disk. Do you know of any programs that will overlay the CPU temp on top of the game while playing?

And if this cooler sounds like this at 4Ghz what will it be like at 4.2 as advertised! Something aint right surely!?!

OK I just installed Core Temp....

Tj.Max 83C
CPU #0 64C Min 63C Max 71C

And regarding the Noctua cooler am I right thinking I will have to remove the housing around the CPU socket with the 4 bolts to fit it?

Watch the CPU Coolers that I recommended, and yes, you can see all about the installation method of the respective cooler in the guide.

Yea I ordered the Noctua today. For a horizontal fit the fan will be hitting the high profile Vengeance but the Noctua site shows it can be clipped on a few fins up on the heat sink. So very happy about that. Ordered a few new case fans aswell. Done a bench test and quite happy with the numbers. Get the noise down then I will be over clocking the 970 a little as FarCry4 is showing 99% GPU usage on maxed settings but the 970 is still quite quiet. Get the Noctua on, see what fan noise is like then probably over clock that too. It's looking good so far. But barring in mind the 970 was a Christmas present it has ended up nearly a new PC! Ha

I dont' know I have a feeling the whine is from the PSU like a lot of people says and the CPU is just the loud one as it's a small 60-70mm fan running very fast as the stock heatsink isn't that strong. Whatever is making the sound the Noctua cooler you linked should be good. Not as good as the expensive D14/15 models but probably around the CM Hyper TX3 or Hyper 212

I guess it is the CPU fan then. Replacing just the fan with a better one would probably fix the sound issue but it's not really cost efficient to just get a fan compared to just upgrading to a decent/budget aftermarket cooler
