What Cooler Should I Get?

Solution

There is a Noctua NH-D15 and NH-D15S (Slim). Both work well. I believe the S is the one that is asymmetrical and is supposed to be compatible with any motherboard/socket configuration. It only comes with one fan in the middle, which is how it fit with any memory. A second fan can be added, but may have to be moved up on the side.

Simple installation video here ^

Unmatched Compatibility
Zero RAM Interference

Focusing on providing the widest range of
compatibility, the H7 utilizes an asymmetric slanted
heatpipe layout to move the heatsink away from the
RAM zone, Offering optimal compatibility for RAM
with tall heat spreaders on both Intel 115X and
AMD platforms.

The Cryorig H7 is a great cooler for it's price. But you didn't mention your budget. I have a list of high-end air coolers if you want. The case you picked out doesn't seem to support liquid cooling as far as I can tell? None of these are necessary though. Just if you want the best.

The price of yours are fine. Really im just looking for anything that will allow me to overclock if i want to, not that i know how!. Up to $100 is alright.

edit: will the noctua one, which seems to be the best of the bunch, fit? And will it be too big for the RAM?

just get cryorig H7 as SR-71 has suggested. Its the best for its price. No use to waste money on heatsink, they won't make the cpu fly. You better off use the money to upgrade the SSD. Samsung 960 evo is more appropriate for your build. OR you can use the money to get better cpu like i7-6850K.

Sometimes people just like to waste money on heatsink, I still do not understand why spending $100 or more while you can use it to get better cpu. The more you overclock, the more electric bill you will pay. For me under $40 is the ideal budget for heatsink, but that just me.

oh, so even if it cant fit on the side it can be move to the top? Or it can just slide upwards on the side?

Anyway, is this the one you would recommend as well? And what about what the guy above you said? Sorry for all the questions

I dont know if i can overclock with that though. And i think the 7700k is just as good if not better than 6850k. Either way the difference is negligible.

    ■ Usually we find out how much voltage our CPU can go with any cooler without playing with multiplier or bus speed, even motherboard has its own voltage capability limit, so first step is figuring out stability by voltage related setting. Later let say your build max Vcore is 1.3V then make this your as starting point to OC.
    ■ Let say you eventually reach 5GHz, stable at stressing with Prime95 or other tools and hit unstable at 5.1GHz with Cryorig H7, then you can try better TIM such as Arctic MX5 or Gelid + faster static pressure fan such as EKWB FF5 or Noctua 3000RPM.
encore, the test results presented by online reviewer may vary, many factors determine including TIM appliance + ambient temperature + fans choice. To use that results as reference is saving us time and money rather than doing personal test.
    ■ These are some air cooler that have been tested and came up the top
    - Cryorig H5 Ultimate
    - Phanteks PH TC14PE
    - Noctua NH D15, DH14
    - Bequiet Dark Rock Pro 3
If you use low profile RAM such as Corsair LPX then there won't be any issue with RAM clearance or nudge graphic card (MSI Z270 Gaming 5 has one free PCIe slot closest to CPU socket), Rosewill Challenger is 170mm CPU cooler it'll fit tallest CPU air cooler.
    ■ Corsair LPX is about 31mm tall, with Cryorig H7 (~ 34mm RAM clearance depend fan's thickness and diameter)

What makes the noctua perfect for that?

Thank you, the overclocking will come later if i feel like i even need it. Right now i think im going to go with the cryorig H7, unless people think it would be worth it to go with a better one like the Noctua, but im not entirely sure it will fit over the RAM because it is huge! Also not sure which way the fans should be facing...

because the Noctua has an asymetric design. When you install it on the CPU, you'll see that it frees space near the PCI side, and since you can use it with only one fan, or add a 120mm fan, you can use any type of RAM you want, even those with a high rad on them:

noctua_nh_d15s_9_2_1.jpg

ok it's expensive, but it's the best out there. I've had 2 of them, one over my FX8370 and now over my RyZen 1700x, I've added a 120mm fan at the front, and the temps were really low. It's also very easy to install. The technical support from Noctua is also great, they sent me the AM4 adapter in less than 5 days :)

Buy a different motherboard than the one you have selected. Asus maximum ix hero is a great choice if you are going for overclocking. And buy a liquid cooler if you going for overclocking. The Intel i7 7700k runs hot and flactuates a lot more than you ever saw. Just get a tech guy if you think you can't fit it yourself. watch a few videos to understand the installation process if you want to do it yourself. It may seem overwhelming but not that hard.

oh ok wow this looks like a great choice then! For the non slim one though, is there any way for me to tell whether or not it will fit and not interfere with the pcie slot? I mean after all, its only $10 more but has an extra fan. If it wouldnt fit, the slim seems like the one im gonna go with.

I would do some measuring inside your case and compare your measurements with the dimensions of the heatsink.

*Turn your machine off before you do. I was doing this the other day (looking to upgrade my cooler) and ended up with some BSODs and some random freezing of Windows because I laid my case over on it's side while it was still on. :( BSOD happened right after I set it down on its side, and kept doing it for a couple days until I removed all my hardware and reassembled AND reinstalled Windows.

I know my case will be fine. It has a rather large area for tall cpu fans! I am more worried about whether i will need the slim because the normal version will interfere with the pcie slot on the motherboard i plan on buying. In which case,i dont know how to measure that. I mean worst case scenario i put the gpu in the other pcie slot right?

but the website says the d15 does not interfere with the first pcie slot, as it indicates for other boards when it does. And with ram, all i have to do is slide the fan up a bit, but it shouldnt be a problem in the first place.

thing is, you might change motherboard someday, and you'll be happy to have the 15s :)
but the 15 is as great as its brother so go for it :)
