i'm going to buy a ryzen 7 1700x for my birthday but it doesn't come with a cooler and I don't know which one i should buy. i'm hoping to spend less than $50 USD on one

Something like Cooler master 212 Evo or any cooler with 4 heat pipes and 120mm fan(s). There's tons of them in that segment.

I'd agree, any tower cooler will work great.
