What could be wrong when my pc randomly freezes?

Hello,
I have a problem with my computer which is hard to describe, but it's annoying enough to find a solution for it. My computer seems to freeze at random when running just about any program, it can be caused when going through some folders in explorer, or when using mozilla or internet explorer or when playing games or watching a movie. It's like the program doesn't respond for a few seconds, sometimes i can just continue to alt tab and still run different things when the one program is stuck, but i can't just ctrl alt delete and end the program because it just keeps on frozen. It lasts about 1 min or so, and then everything just works perfectly normal, movie or game continues playing for half an hour, and then it happens again. I have looked through this forum and many others on internet but it's hard to find something similar. I've tried those solutions (i'll sum up what i've already tried below) but none of them worked. I've tottally ran out of ideas now and before I go spend alot of money to get rid of this problem I ask this forum for help. I thank you in advance for helping me out here.

What i've tried so far:
-Format and reinstall windows ultimate 64 bit
- ran memtest (latest version) => no errors
- test to check every sector on harddrive (it took nearly 2 days, just to find absolutely nothing wrong)
- remove ram one by one (still occurs doesn't matter which one of my ram is in there)
- switch ram places
-disassemble and re-assemble my computer and clean it for dust, with no results
- There are no heating issues
- updates bios drivers and all other drivers, and also tried using another, older video driver (made no difference)

What I think: I think it's either my motherboard or memory, but even when it's one of those, I want to make sure which one it is before I buy something new but I can not exclude what is wrong here.

Specs:
- Windows 7 ultimate 64bit

- mb: Asus P6T SE
- processor: intel core i7 920 @ 2.67 ghz
- 6 gb ddr3 ram (OCZ reaper 3-kit)
- Graph card: Nvidia ENGTX295

maybe another issue that could be related: I cannot seem to install SP1 for windows after the format (Error_not_found issue). I've already formatted 6 times in the last 7 days but the service pack only succeeded to install just once (but then the freezes came back so I formatted again after running some tests) and now i'm back to being without SP1 because the error 'error_not_found' occurs...

Thank you very much for reading and I hope someone can give me some insight in this matter

You have found your problem, a sector test of your hard drive should only take an hour or so to do. Download from your hard drive manufactures web site their diagnostic software and test the drive. I recommend that you immediately backup your data if it is important to you.

Try this:

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump and see if there are crash dumps of your computer.
Visit http://www.osronline.com/page.cfm?name=analyze and upload your LATEST crash dump (otherwise you have to download a crash dump analyzer from microsoft if you don't trust this website).

The analyzer will show you where the problem is. Maybe it will point to a driver that is too old.

These steps helped me alot in the past fixing computers...

Hi,

So far i've tried:
- to find the minidump folder, but it's not there :s So i think it just hasn't been created because i've never had these kind of errors after my format C.
- I've ran the hard disk diagnostics tool from the website from Western Digital (it's the brand of hard drive I have). It found no errors.
- I have checked how to instal the SP1 from the website Scout_03 gave, but I'm not sure which one to download from there :s

Also: I've had this problems for over 2 weeks now, I've started trying to repair it about a week ago. And today, I haven't had a single freeze so far... What might have changed? I'm totally confused here, I haven't changed a thing since the last time it froze. Well I sure hope it doesn't occur again, but I'd still like to know how to prevent or fix this :s
