Hi so i have an ASUS iii Extreme Motherboard, socket LGA 1366 and was wondering what CPU and GPU which is also low cost but good performance as I know nothing about this Mobo or socket as its fairly old and I've worked with newer components.

I also dont mind having to overclock to get more equal performance to an expensive chip with a cheaper one.

The reason for me being a cheapscape is I already have 2 rigs one with an I7 4790k and the other with an I5 4460 so this rig will be cheap and hopefully powerful and wall mounted as it looks nice :)
Many thanks

Solution
The cheapest CPU for LGA 1366 is I7 920/930, but they are only Quad-core. If you realy want to have the most fun out of LGA 1366. You want a 6 core cpu. That is I7 970/980 non x/I7 980X/I7 990X or a Xeon. Some of the LGA desktop LGA 1366 motherboards can also run Xeon cpu with 6 cores and they can be found on ebay for cheap if lucky. But not all motherboards can handle Xeon and i dont know for sure if yours can.

But i have had two I7 1366 CPU´s. An I7 920 and last monfh i swapped the I7 920 out with an I7 980X. The i7 980X is deffently the most fun, runs way cooler than my old I7 920 and the bedst overclokker but also one of the most exspensive of the LGA 1366 socket CPU´s.

You asked about what GPU is bedst and to that i will not...
If you can pick up one of the 6 core i7 CPUs cheap like the 970 or 980 i would get one of them.

I'm running a i7 970 on a Asus Rampage III Extreme OC'd to 3.6 on air with a 212 EVO temps never get above 58.

awesome, thanks for the suggestion
will look into some performance videos of that CPU and GPU together!

omg those temps! they're lower than my 4790k on a AIO liquid cooler, how well will this CPU handle multi threaded games and photo/video editing. I mainly want the PC for running a media server, occasionally playing games but they will be games like gta, cod etc that i can play on my TV and video encoding for streaming. do you think the CPU can handle all of that?

also is it worth liquid cooling it to OC it to a higher GHz value?

The i7 970 runs GTA V very very well and that was before i OC'd it, and its paired with a GTX 960 not the best graphics card although soon to be replaced by a 1070, i've also run witcher 3, doom, tomb raider, also run really well.
I can't really comment on video editing as thats not something i have tried on it.

I have heard of people OC the 970 above the 4GHz barrier so it could be well worth it your big into games but i'm sure liquid is required at that speed.

You asked about what GPU is bedst and to that i will not recommend any higher than GTX 980 TI/GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 as the apselut max. Forget SLI with these cards. The CPU will be a bottleneck even if overclokket to 4 GHz+. I have two GTX 970 in sli in my system and that runs perfekt but with the exsperience i have had with this setup i will not go any higher with GPU power. GTX 970 sli is about a one GTX 980 TI/GTX 1070 and if overclokket high close to a stock GTX 1080.

Here is a firestrike bench of my two CPU´s and bofh with GTX 970 SLI.

I7 920 4.4 GHz

I7 980X at 4.3 GHz the clocks i use for every day work/games.

I can comfirm that X58 CPU's can go 4 GHz+ with no problem. But 4 GHz+ on at LGA 1366 cpu dosent need water cooling. A good air cooler is what you need. I have OC an I7 920 and now a I7 980X to above 4 GHz and that oc with air cooling. I7 920 where cooled by an Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU cooler with two silverstone FM 121 fans and used Artic silver 5 cooling paste that cut hold the cpu at 70 C (70 C is the tresshold i keep all my CPU´s at for long life span) at 4.1 GHz and a I7 980X clokket to 4.3 GHz cooled by an Noctua NH-D14 with 3 silverstone FM121 fans and thermal grizzly kryonaut cooling paste.

Ilde temp for I7 980X at 4.3 GHz

http://peecee.dk/uploads/022017/Ilde_temp_I7_980X_4.3_GHz.jpg

Temp at max load at 4.3 GHz

http://peecee.dk/uploads/022017/Load_temp_I7_980X_4.3_GHz.jpg

So no a 4 GHz oc on a LGA 1366 cpu dosent need water cooling for that. i would more say water cooling if you want to oc and still keep it silent.

Do you own the Rampage or Maximus III Extreme? Either way, this fellow talks about picking up a Xeon X5650 and overclocking it to 4 GHz in an LGA1366 motherboard. I believe the 6-core Xeons are significantly cheaper than the six-core i7-9xx chips, though their base clocks may be lower than the i7.

This video has more info, though unfortunately I don't think he specifies which motherboard he used.

Hi thanks for the reply! I will look into that CPU, i was looking at a I7 920 but wasn't sure and if you say this game runs GTA which is one of the main games I will be playing I may consider this CPU, thanks!

Hello thanks for that , you mentioned it being more fun with the 6 core extreme edition processors, depending on the cost per performance would you say its better to go with a 6 core xeon (if they are overclockable) or an 6 core I7 as this system will be air cooled at the start till I finish my custom wall mount chassis and pump/res combo for GPUs at the moment I have a 970 i can pull out of an existing build or I have a 560ti but havent used the 560ti for some time not sure if it will handle GTA, farcry, titanfall etc very well, If i was to need a cheaper GPU than a 970 which would you recommend?

Hello Yes i own the Rampage or Maximus III Extreme got it for a steal price of £10 which probably works out to be $15 it only had a couple of bent pins so I straightened them out (biggest pain in the A**) and tested for it to power etc and seems to work just need the CPU now, you say this guy overclocked a XEON to 4+ GHz I will now take a look into the 6 core Xeon side of things as never really looked into them as they are server chips and though they'd be no good for gaming.

From what I believe this Mobo is very good for overclocking so I dont think it matters the guy not saying which mobo he used, thanks for the video!

What i meant with a 6 core be more fun is just in generelt no matter if you get a I7 or at Xeon. Xeon is just a great overclokker as the I7 if not even better and Xeon is also mostly cheaper than a I7. The problem with Xeon is that you need to be sure that your mohterboard can support a Xeon as not all Desktop X58 mobo can handle them and what models of Xeon they support. I sujest ýou try contact Asus support, they can maybe answer you about that or just make a new thread and se if one of the users here already running a Xeon in there mobo that is the same as yours. Also notice that there different bios version and you maybe have to update to a newer bios for maybe to get Xeon support. But i dont know if your board can handle a Xeon, just Xeon tends to oc better an be a bit cheaper.

About GPU. I would deffently not go any lower that that GTX 970 you have now for GTA V. Even my two cards can be maxed out if you set Eye candy to the highest possible settings in GTA. So one card can not max the games max setting out with out lag. Dont use the GTX 560 TI for gaming. That card is old and weak + dosent have DX 12 support and way to little Vram som dont iven think about sli GTX 560 TI. better SLI GTX 970 if any thing or sell GTX 970 and find a used GTX 980 Ti. Else keep your GTX 970 that system for games.

ok thanks for the info on the Xeons as i thought they had the same socket they must be supported, will do some research into which xeons my board supports (if any) hoping it will as i want it to be as cheap as possible as i have a main pc whihc runs everything fine just wanted this one as something i can keep constantly plugged into the TV to act like a console only loads better. Im thinking I will whack the 970 in there as it also fits the red and black scheme. if my mobo does not support a xeon im thinking i will go with either cpu you have mentioned which ever I find cheap on ebay

Some of the Xeons has the same socket and will fik physicly in the mobo, its the Bios that can be problem. If that is not made to reconice Xeon, then the mobo will not boot with the mobo.

Wise choise with GPU.

I found a I7 970 and a I7 980 non x on ebay and sellers has positive responds. These CPU´s are 6 cores parts to X58 and your motherboard. But i dont now if they ship to your location.

Xeon are best cpu for 1366 x5660 x5670 x5680 x5690 u can find x5660 for 50 to 80 usd and they are far better than i7, for gpu u can take what u want with a Xeon + ht u 're gpu won't be bottleneck

I'm running an X5680 and GTX 1080 in my Asus Sabertooth X58. Runs great. At 1080p i can run ultra setttings in GTAV AND NEVER DIP below 60fps. At high settings I can hit 200 FPS in GTAV benchmark.
