So a while back I bought a pre-built, but now I am finishing upgrading. The last two things I have to upgrade is my cpu and mobo, I know I kind of upgraded in a stupid way.

So I need some advice on what to get as my cpu, I know its 2017 and ryzen came out and theres tons of cpus to choose from, so I would love some help:)
Also I know when I upgrade my mobo I will have to get some ddr4 ram, which I will do.

Current build:
mobo: gigabyte ga-78lmt-usb3
cpu: fx 4300 (YIKES)
gpu: gtx 960
psu: Thermaltake 850W Gold (Overkill, but got a good deal)
Ram: Corsair Vengeance
HDD and SSD

I will be heading off to college next year so I will be using it for school work, gaming, programming, and maybe some light video/photo editing.

Thank you for all the help, it is truly appreciated :)

Solution
Get a none (x) 6 or 8 core Ryzen depending on your budget. Get a b350 so you can overclock. You need good 3000~3200 RAM for reduced latency.

For a combined of both cpu and mobo, I would like to try to stay around $300 maybe a little over
If you could it would be awesome if you could show me what you would recommend with that budget, also like a best value duo, and possibly what you would recommend without a budget. If you do not want to do all 3 I totally understand, thanks for the help in anyway you respond!

WIth the ryzen you don't think the 960 would be an injustice? or would it be fine until whenever my brain tells me I want a better gpu haha. Also would ryzen be the best choice as of now in the cpu world?

If you want to stay under 300$ on the CPU and Motherboard, i would recommend to get a Ryzen 5 instead of a seven, though if you could get the Ryzen 7, i'd say go for it.

Na the 960 is fine. I'm going to upgrade to the 1700 with my 280. Both GPU's are about the same performance wise. I use my PC for gaming but other stuff also. As games use more threads upgrade your GPU.

For your listed workload yes Ryzen would be the best. If you get into large programming projects a well threaded CPU can reduce compile times by a lot. The same goes for video rendering tasks when quality matters the most. (CPU rendering offers the best quality per bit rate). Ryzen is faster than Intel dollar for dollar in this area and still offers great gaming performance. And if you wanted with a Ryzen chip you could render a video with a few cores and play a game :)

Also, how long do you think this build would last me while still performing well?
