What CPU best for gaming?

depending on your build funds the brodewell-e chips will be out that will be muilt core units for the 2011-3 mb. if your thinking of wating till nov or dec by that time wait for the new skylake e chips as there going to use a whole new mb and chipset. min gaming system that can play most games would be a locked i5 and h/b micro atx mb and 960/970 gpu. i7 cpu has hypertherding and works in programs and games that can use it. in real life your better off getting a cpu that has real cores. if your doing editing or photoshop. a lot of people now are using xeon cpu in the rigs.

I bought E3-1231V3 for working purposes in 2014 (I need tall 8 threads for the work but I was on really tight budget) and after some months, I started to use it for gaming too.

That Xeon rocks! A lot better than I had expected.
That processor chews Witcher 3, FallOut 4, GTA 5, etc. like chewing Tofu.
I originally built the rig only with a single GTX970 but after I moved from U2412M to XB270HU, I bought the second GTX970.

BTw, you have a lot of time until end of the year. I am pretty sure you can and will find better processors by then.

I have to disagree with you on that.

Both Xeons I mentioned have Turbo Boost, but if the clock speed is already sufficiently high, it's a non-issue anyway.

There are existing games that do utilise Hyper-Threading; GTA V is one such example. DX12 is only going to continue this trend.

I stick to my original answer, but admit that the Xeon option works too, its a matter of finding one that is works well in terms of performance/$ whilst i believe the ix series is a lot easier to keep track of in that respect. There will be new Kabylakes (not sure of spellling) coming out this year at some point, but when exactly is unknow, until then, the best option in my opinion is to grab a 6700K if you can afford it and keep it for a while, or if money is an issue a 6600K/6600 and hold on to it until multiple core use is of more use in game design

Kaby Lake isn't really worth waiting for in my view. Considering that it was a last minute thing still on 14nm, I am betting that it consists of "Skylake, but clocked better and maybe better Integrated Graphics." The Xeon or the i5 are the best CPUs, (for gaming), i7s are okay but cost a whole lot more.

Those 7th gens are nesting in everyone's mind. As said an i5 is good to go but if you want video editing , then i7.
