What is better for gaming? An i5-8400 Or A Ryzen 5 2600X

The i5 Is 178$ But the ryzen is 210$. Which is better? Ive seen alot of gaming benchmarks and it looks like in most games the i5 pulls a frame or two more.

If thats true id go with the intel because i can save like 50$ on the mobo and cpu and id probably use that for a bigger ssd or ram or whatevs. But if the ryzen pulls like 10-20fps more im gonna pay that extra.

Also dont use overclocking results on the ryzen 5 2600X because i dont plan to overclock it.

If Gaming is your priority, then the 8400 is a fantastic CPU for gaming and is better than the Ryzen 2600X...Overall it does give better frame rates across games when going head to head with any Ryzen...Not bad on productivity but if productivity is also a focus then Ryzen comes into play in a big way...

But you haven't seen those benchmarks, so why think they exist?

Techpowerup does a good job of running lots of tests on things, so lets look at their review of the 2600X

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_5_2600X/18.html

The first chart shows the results of CPU tests. The 2600X scores a nice win here. If you are doing lots of editing or other heavy CPU tasks, the 2600X is the better choice. If you really only want the best gaming chip, look at their (1080 I'm assuming) gaming results. At 1080 the 8400 is ~5% faster. I doubt you would even notice this. That's basically a tie. Their final chart shows the "performance per dollar" which takes into account the cost of the chip vs the performance you get. The 8400 is much higher here.

What I meant to say is if you are worried about gaming only, the 8400 is a great chip. Cheaper than the 2600X so as you pointed out you can get an SSD or a better GPU. While you probably wouldn't notice 5%, it's nice that the cheaper chip is the faster one. If you are worried about gaming only, the 8400 is the way to go. If you need a chip to do heavy CPU tasks, it's nice that the 2600X is nearly as fast as the 8400 in games. You really aren't giving anything up.

So if i go with the i5 i get better frame rates and save more? Cool
Thx for your response man! 😀

No problems at all...and enjoy your new PC... Now adays you cant really buy a bad CPU, thanks to AMD stepping up with Ryzen and bringing compition, Intel are having to compete again and the 8400 for the price and gaming as the prime focus is great!

Thx man have a nice day!

Thx man for your in depth answer. Really cleared some question on the cpus!

Listen,

6 core 6 threads (the 8400, 8600K has no hyperthreading) is about to be out and not enough from 2019. If you want an Intel, I suggest you get a 6 core / 12 threaded CPU or just get a 2600 and OC it. Also, know that you only get better FPS if you are CPU limited and at 1440P we are all GPU limited - if you own a 60 Hz screen it does not matter at all.

So in 6-12 months everyone with a 8600K and lower won't have "enough"? I'm pretty sure this is hyperbole. Plain and simple. Sorry. Current minimum CPU for most AAA games is the 3770. I don't see that moving to the 8700K in one gen. In <12mo. Not happening.

6 cores 6 threads not enough in 2019????...talk about as 4745454b would say 'hyperbole'... We are so lucky at the moment with great CPU's on both sides and the power we have at the moment in terms of processing is more than enough especially for his use case which is games...Now if he was doing massive rendering, editing at a pretty professional level then yest, he should by something like Threadripper but a 8400/8600 is more than good enough for the next 3 years of great gaming let alone 2019!!!

As the techpowerup benches show, you couldn't buy a bad gaming CPU even before AMD stepped up,the pure quad i3-8350k is right on par with the 2600x with an extra 25% overclock headroom on top of that while a 4c/8t would be even faster (game permitting)
The only thing that changed is the cost of cores for someone who needs rendering/scientific computing stuff.

I will take your word for it and of course techpowerup's!!! I gave up on AMD after there fantastic Ahtlon series going back a long, long way...My comment was just based on my user experience as boy do the average consumer CPU buyers have a great choice and at very good prices for the performance now available...
