What CPU Is Better?

hello i was wondering what cpu is better intel core 2 quad extreme qx9650 or the intel core 2 quad q9650 i know these processor are really old but i want to know which one is better for gaming and livestreaming please dont advise any cpu just tell me which one is better thank you

Yes the xtreme is better. Overclocking is less damaging on these older processors (I still game just fine on mine "q6600 @3.6-3.8 depending on the game) There is no memory controller onboard so increasing the voltage has less consequence as you can not damage anything more than the processor it self , but it has built in safeguards that will prevent the cpu from starting anything at all if it is overheating due to over voltage or poor cooling.

Qx9650 will be better but only for overclocking, they are in fact the same cpu. If you that cpu is fine for that gpu almost perfect actually they are good match.

extreme does not mean that at all, extreme means the clock multiplier is unlocked for easy overclocking
everything else is exactly the same, it will possibly overclock more than the other but also it may not the c2q were all really good overclockers, the qx9650 is able to OC better on lesser motherboards.

Everything else is exactly the same.
 





so what do u think the max overclock would be for the extream and the one without extreme? all ima do is livestream dayz and other games i got a gtx 660 gpu ima encode that using on obs what u think bro? which one do u advise me to go for?

 


Maybe you're just trying to be funny. Let's go with that.

Hyper-threading means that there are two instruction pipelines, and if one gets blocked, then the other can provide instructions for the processor. It does entail switching between the threads and has a small but measurable overhead that accompanies it - whether it's used or not.

It is beneficial in situations where there are many tasks to be processed, but if there is only a single task such as a game (or maybe Prime95 as an extreme example) it may slightly affect performance.

That is why in most situations, there is no benefit to having an Core i7 vs a core i5 in a gaming computer. The situation here may well be the same.

At the same time, the Extreme processor uses about 1/3rd more wattage to deliver roughly the same workload.

I've had to look at this a bit (and I'm still not sure I'm not making a mistake somewhere), but the only explanation I can have is that the "extreme" processor was announced a year earlier than the non-extreme processor (2007 vs 2008) and that technology within the Yorkfield line improved that dramatically in the intervening year.

 



so ur thinking the no extreme version is better? all im going to have is 2 or 3 task running max i dont like running too much tasks at the same time im going to be playing and livestreaming dayz and dayz uses like 2.5ghz and im going to encode using my gpu and i dont plane on overclocking it so which one do u prefer for me to go for?

And especially in gaming today it's really hard to spot that difference as most games are single threaded. An overclocked E6600 processor will get you near same results compared to the QX9650 in games as shown today.


The same article did mention that the author could OC the Extreme edition to 4GHz, but he also had a 1000W PSU. He did not actually mention how much power it took to OC to that level.

*You have a GTX660 which means you can use the Shadowplay feature to stream video if you want. I believe that supports Twitch but there was another program (forget name) that could use the hardware encoder on the card (NVENC).

This hardware method uses far less of your CPU which is very important in your case so depending on settings it might mean a difference between a 10% frame rate loss (i.e. 66FPS to 60FPS) using Shadowplay and a 40% loss to 36FPS with a software method (not using your NVENC encoder).

Update:
The OBS program apparently can use the NVENC encoder to minimize CPU usage in encoding the video! I've never used it but I assume there's a setting to enable it.

i dont plane on overclocking it but if i want can i ? i have a gigabyte motherboard and i have options to overclock it

 


i dont need to overclock it so if i dont its gonna be the same as extreme right? and i spoke with couple of people that own the q9650 and they said u can clock it up to 4.0 / 4.5ghz easy but i dont need to overclock so if i dont overclock its the same as extreme right?

Not a good overclocking motherboard. The extreme will give you a better overclock as you can turn up the multiplier.

I have a similar motherboard and the front side bus (FSB) maxes out somewhere in the 35x-36xMhz range which leave you very little OC room on this chip due to the already huigh 333Mhz FSB having the option to adjust the multiplier would give you more options for the overclocking method. You can raise the multiplier which is not an option for the stand q9650 as you could only move the fsb up 30Mhz and that gives you next to nothing for an overclock. 270Mhz would be the max overclock for the standard q9650. The qx9650 might be able to move up the clock (FSB) multiplier in place of moving the FSB clock.
q9650
Clock multiplier--> 9x333FSB is 3.Ghz
Clock multiplier-->9x369FSB is 3.31Ghz

Qx 9650----> if you move the unlocked multiplier
Clock multiplier--> 9x333FSB is 3.Ghz
Clock multiplier--> 11x333FSB 3.6Ghz

You see how the high FSB and the low support for FSB on that motherboard hobble the overclocking on an otherwise excellent overclocking chip.
 





so for the q9650 i can overclock it to 3.31ghz? im only gonna be playing dayz and streaming but ima use my gpu to encode it so do u think i need a overclock?

I'd say that if you're using such an old processor, you should go for the best overclock you can because you've got a lot of ground to make up. As long as you keep it cool enough it should last longer than you will want to be stuck with it.

That being the case, I'd go with the QX9650 for its unlocked multiplier.

Overheating is the only thing that damages these older cpu's overvolting only causes heat, no damage will occur from too much voltage except to much heat.

On these older cpu's they can take lots of voltage as the mem controller is on the motherboard and the cpu's also do not have any onboard graphics to damage with too much voltage.
