What cpu is good for streaming and recording fortnite

I want to know what cpu would be good for streaming and recording fortntie, with also a bit of sony vegas and after effects on the side. My game is really choppy when i try to record r stream but im not sure if it has to do with the low core/threads of my current cpu. right now I am currently using an i5 7500 with a evga gtx 1060 3gb sc and 8 gigs of ram clocked at 2400mhz. I am planning to upgrade but im not sure if i should go with an i7 7700 or just switch out for a ryzen 7 1700 or a ryzen 5 1600.

I think i5-8400 (under 200$ vs 280$, ebay not sure about other sites) should be a good upgrade if you don't wanna swap motherboard, and save up cash because amd depends on fast ram and dual channel, you need 8GB more ram cause it will help a lot with rendering.
And which motherboard?
Which PSU do you have?
Do you play any other games, im unsure how 1060 plays with rendering, i know that my 1050Ti stutters here and there at 50% scale on 1hour video.

I5-7700K will run on the same motherboard as a I5-7500. (i5-8400 8th gen needs a different motherboard and ram))

You will get 8 threads vs. 4 currently. That is good for multithreaded apps and multiprogramming.

The k gets you a higher base clock(4.2 vs. 3.4) which is good for everything, particularly gaming.

If you now have a motherboard that permits overclocking, you can do even better.

If you go the ryzen route, you will need a new motherboard.
You will get 12 or 16 threads which is good for batch multithreaded apps.
But with a good overclock to around 4.0, it will not be quite as good for gaming.

I pretty much only play fortnite and osu! and a little bit of storm 4, im pretty sure if i go for an 8th gen i would have to get a new motherboard but would an i7 7700 be enough for stream and recording needs

No it cannot, then it seems ryzen is good option for you then, i7 could do it but im unsure will it give you after you wanna play heavy games later.
However you turn you have to change PSU if you go for ryzen.

So would it be better for me to get a r5 or r7 with another 8 gig ram stick with a new motherboard and psu

There is not an easy answer here.
You have a relatively well balanced system.

My guess is that you will benefit from more threads than you have now(4)
That is because you get problems while multitasking.
Is 8 enough?
Do you need 6/8/12/16 or more?
It is hard to tell.

Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.

What is your budget?

I think the simple thing to do is to buy a used I7-7700K which will set you back some $250-$280.
You will not be able to overclock it with your B250 motherboard, but the stock and turbo speeds of the 7700K are higher than the non overclockable i7-7700.

If it turns out that you need lots more, then you are looking at bigger bucks for a later gen ryzen or 8th gen intel processor and motherboard. I say go used because the resale value will not change much if you need to resell it.

There is another potential issue, and that is ram.
When you multiprocess, you need to keep all the active tasks resident in ram.
That may require more than the 8gb you have.
Since your motherboard has only two ram slots, you are looking at replacing your 8gb with a 2 x 8gb kit.
If you originally bought a single 8gb stick, you are running now in slower single channel mode.
Adding another 8gb stick will be good if it works.
But, Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
The internal workings are designed for the capacity of the kit.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards, particularly AMD can be very sensitive to this.
This is more difficult when more sticks are involved.
That is why ram vendors will NOT support ram that is not bought in one kit.

Then, on graphics. If you need a stronger graphics card, your 450w psu is not going to support a significantly stronger graphics card.

Bottom line is that unless you have the budget for a big rebuild, I suggest you go slow and do a simple cpu upgrade with a 7700K.

Ryzen 7 1700 is the logical option here. It costs a bit but it'll handle any game + a stream without breaking a sweat.
