Hi,
Im looking to upgrade my i7-4790 cpu as it doesn’t support ddr4 but will need a new motherboard as well. I’m looking to spend £200-300 on second hand (if not new) on them total. I’d like a 6 core preferably was looking at 8700k but it’s to much out my price range. I mainly game and program.

thanks

Even this would be new:

Single core the Intel is probably still on par, but you get the additional corea and multi-core speed, as well as a new platform.

If you went used you could get a 3rd Gen Ryzen potentially.

Is that £200-300 INCLUDING RAM, CPU, and Motherboard? or do you have a separate budget for the RAM?

Is the an Amd alternative with same speed but more cores as the 6700k
Clock speed is only one aspect of a cpu, an i 7700k vs ryzen 3300x, the performance difference in most of the games is about 5fps i doubt you'll notice it, ik both the processor are different from what is being discussed but this video must give you a clear view

This is whats worth paying, quite frankly, 6/12 will serve you long compared to i7 6700k

Z370 GAMING PLUS would this motherboard be good for it(£100) I can get a 8700k for £200 the same ram £50. What’s a good cooler for it that would fit this board if it’s good
If you have decided for overclocking that's great you'll need to keep in consideration you will also require a really good power supply and you might have to change your PC's voltages like in 4~6 months as your parts aged and since alot of heat is generated the overall lifespan of components decreases, i am not saying the disadvantages of oc but im saying all this so that you can keep all in mind and a good cooler will be necessary.

The PSU is a cool master GX 550w bronze and I’ve found a slot for it which means I can’t have a side panel on which isn’t a problem as there isn’t much dust in my room however I’ve power it on and the temps are pushing 90 degrees, is this because I’ve not applied thermal paste properly? Thanks

If your PC is doing everything you wish just hold out DDR4 is not some magical fix. It took them almost a year after DDR4 came out to beat my old DDR3 @2400mhz with 11 timings.

EDIT you need a better reason to upgrade parts other than just so you can run DDR4 memory!
