Im building a gaming rig and i need to choose a cpu for my motherboard the two im choose from is Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor and the Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor whech should i buy for my msi z170i gaming pro ac motherboard?

Solution
Since the 8xxx series processors are not compatible with the Z100 series motherboards, you should opt for the Intel Core I7-7700K (or switch to a H/Z300 series motherboard).

I used pcpartpicker to choose the parts and why would i need a new board?

(Remember: UserBenchmark offers a *general* consensus of how something will optimally perform in real-world situations, in the best comparison for that particular case, as in, in this case, general workload, gaming, multicore utilization and rendering, ect..)

The price difference (by MSRP, not suggesting that's the exact price you'll pay) is nearly negligible, and the performance difference is clear. It's been a while since I've really answered many questions, but it's my understanding that the LGA1151 socket for the 8700K is different therein from the LGA1151 which the 6th/7th gen Skylake and Kaby Lake processors used? Unless, that is, newer generation boards for 8th gen Coffee Lake support 7th/6th gen as legacy or otherwise. But, as a blanket answer for PTP ratio, the 8700K seems like an obvious choice.
