[SOLVED] What CPU should I upgrade to? (i7-7700k)

I wanted to upgrade my CPU because 1) I need a better one to run tf2/csgo (since source games run mainly off CPU not GPU), while also streaming (which takes up CPU usage as well obviously)

2) It runs annoyingly hot, I've been through 4 coolers and many thermal pastes... so dont tell me about that shiz

So what CPU should I upgrade to that would FIT IN THE SAME MOTHERBOARD (LGA 1151) thats a lot better than a 7700k if possible? I know some of you will suggest an AMD thing but I really don't wanna change motherboard, as that would mean taking a lot out.

Going off passmark's benchmarks there is only one CPU better https://www.cpubenchmark.net/socketType.html#i10 , the
Intel Xeon E-2278GE @ 3.30GHz in terms of LGA 1151 cpu's.

Are you saying you have a 7700K now? It's the end of the road for 100/200 series boards...

Keeping the same mainboard, yet upgrading is not an option, as every CPU afterward (8000, 9000, series) was designed for 300 series boards (and with recent 10th gen CPUs, the newer 400 series boards)

I’m not sure I understand, why can’t an i7-9700k work with my motherboard (MSI Z270 SLI) even though they are both LGA1151? I’m confused. ELI5 please Thankyou Sorry

i7 9700K is also 1151 socket but it require 300 series motherboard. You probably want to get Z390. Z370 motherboard will require 8th gen CPU to update the motherboard bios before it can work with 9th gen CPU.

See if you can return i7 9700K (8c/8t) so you can get 10th gen CPU i7 10700K (8c/16t). I think the price are about the same for both. 10th gen CPU require 400 series motherboard

Do you actually need an upgrade now? Are any of your games running slow or currently require more than the 8 CPU threads your 7700K has? Your only upgrade path for a faster CPU if sticking with Intel would be an i7-9700K or i9-9900K for a 300 series motherboard and, i5-10600K, i7-10700K or i9-10900k for 400 series motherboards.

For AMD you would need at minimum a Ryzen 7 3700X to get a faster CPU per core compared to your 7700K, because even the fantastic Ryzen 3600 is about as fast per CPU core and would only be a sidegrade instead of an upgrade until games actually need more than 8 CPU threads.

As I see it, your best current options for an 8 core 16 thread CPU that will be decent for at least the next 3 years are at least an i7-10700K, Ryzen 7 3700X or Ryzen 7 3800XT. I would wait for Ryzen 4000 to be released later this year before making a decision or wait until next year for whatever Intel releases.

I have the same CPU and for single-thread it is really competitive with newer CPUs. Are you sure the CPU is holding you back? Obviously it lacks more cores.

As others have said, this is already the fastest CPU for your platform. for faster CPU, you need a new board and then you may as well go AMD. Money is a valid reason to not replace a board, but the act of removing the board shouldn't hold you back. For a new CPU you need to replace the cooler anyway, may as well replace the board.

Yes it needs cooling. i had to go to a 120mm Cryorig cooler to stop it from throttling. but that is not better with newer Intel K-CPUs. If you want a faster CPU and want top of the line, you need cooling.

As I said I've been through 3 coolers, cryorig, bequiet, coolermaster

My old one was a

CRYORIG M9i 48.4 CFM CPU Cooler

Didn't work well enough, now I have a be quiet shadow rock slim which works better for temps
