What cpu should i upgrade to?

I am currently using a core i5 7400 and I am planning to upgrade soon. I have a budget of £500. I use my pc for gaming mostly. What cpu and motherboard should I buy?

The Z370/Z390 and 8700K/9600K/9700K are popular....; many instead opt for a B450 and R5-2600X to save quite a few pounds...

As long as you have at least a GTX1050 or an RX480, you should be prepared for about any game at 1080P, but, if higher res is desired on newer games, might be time to ponder a GPU as well, depending on what you already own. (Standing pat with my GTX1060 a while, it does very well at 1080P)
