I just got a GTX 680 from a friend (brand new) and it doesn't seem to be performing as well as it should. My current CPU is an AMD fx 6100 which, based on what I've already researched, is not good enough.

I also read that even an AMD fx 6300 would not be enough without overclocking; and I don't know how to do that.

I'm sure I will need to provide more information, so just let me know.

You're best bet is to go with an Intel setup, but if you're looking to stay with the AM3+ chipset I'd say the FX8350 is going to be your best bet.

Before you go spending money on a new cpu and mobo, I'd learn about how to OC an AMD cpu first. The fx6100 isn't as good as the fx6300, granted, but it'll still OC quite respectably. I feel you'd be better off exhausting you current options before opening new ones.

The gtx680 is a very powerful gpu still, and what you are asking for is balance. You just need the cpu side of the equation. The 6100 can get you close, but only with OC. Even an 8 core fx benefits from OC when paired with powerful gpus.

A basic OC, @4.0GHz to @4.3GHz is relatively easy and often requires nothing more than a bump in the multiplier as stock voltages run considerably high to begin with. Your cpu would show a decent increase in performance with @4.2GHz when paired with the 680.

To do this you'd need to invest in a decent cooler, stock coolers will not work, but it's a sound investment. Something along the lines of CoolerMaster Hyper212 or Cryorig H7 will cost @ $30 and if OC doesn't work well for you and you do buy another cpu/mobo then they will transfer and you'll still get good use from the cooler as it'll run cooler and a lot quieter than the stock freight train.

Just my 2¢

The GA 78lmt s2 is a 760g chipset with a 3+1 power phase and wont handle more than the fx6300, unless you go with the 'E' version of the 8320/8370 which would show no real improvement on a board with that power phase, and will probably show less overall speed at OC with 8 core soaking up the power vrs 6 cores.

To upgrade the cpu will require an upgrade on the mobo too, and most likely the ram. Sorry Op, but you own a pretty low end board, and it won't handle the more powerful cpus like an 8320/8350/8370 which are 125w cpus vrs your current 95w board/cpu. My advice stands, get what you can from OC, or scrap pretty much the cpu/mobo/ram and buy new. You are looking at a $300+ in that case.

Cooler + education. There are many vids, tutorials etc to be found, watch/read them all on OC AMD. Then play. Just take baby steps. Learn how to add a cooler / clean a cpu of old thermal paste first lol, its kinda handy info, and very important. Rubbing alcohol (90%) and coffee filters just became your best friend.

Just remember, baby steps. Small bump, test, repeat till you get an error, then small bump back, test, change settings etc, test.... It takes a while, days, but it's only time. If you are still not happy with the results, then start thinking of replacements.

No Intel chips do not work on AMD motherboards. And after checking your mobos compatibility it looks like the FX6300 is the best chip you could use with your setup unless you change your mobo which in that case you should just go with Intel.
