Question What CPU to choose?

Hello all.

So after a good few years it feels really itchy to replace my i7-4790k.

The only problem is I am not totally brainless on what cpu to get. I mainly game so I would love to choose between r5 3600 or i5 9600k. Maybe even something like r7 3700x and its intel rival.

Main issue for picking is - I don't know what performance gain I would get and if it's really worth an upgrade.

Current specs:
4790k@4.6 ( did not get a high end cooler for more )
16gb 1600 ram
gtx 1070
1Tb hdd
256gb ssd

Games I'm playing are mostly e-sports titles, battle royals and mmos. For me graphics don't matter. I allways play with lowest settings to have 144fps AT ALL TIMES if possible.

And that is not really a case with games like apex legends or pubg.

So what are your thoughts? What kinds of fps bump I could get with a newer cpu? Also I might go up to gtx 1080 if needed as current cpu bottlenecks it pretty hard ( allready had one )

Would think you’d get a solid performance bump as the IPC on both the 3000 Ryzen and intel are higher than the 4790k and you get a lot more threads especially on the 3700X

I'd strike the 9600K from contention, given so many folks reporting being 'thread challenged' , and, professional reviewers reporting occasional (and sometimes too frequent!) stutters in .1/1% low scenarios...(I could live with 100% CPU usage as long as there were no stutters, but, 6c/6t designs are feeling the heat in newer games..)

If you are going Intel for gaming, the choices should really only be 9700K or 9900K/KF...

The 3600 offers excellent value for $199, but, I think if I were building a new rig, and had the budget for it, I'd look hard at 3700, 3700X, or 3800..(especially the former)

I use a ryzen 5 2600x and it's great. It's has a 3.6ghz and can go to 4.2ghz. the stock cooler is not very good for overclocking though it's perfect for casual gaming and lots of AAA titles. The CPU itself is 150.99 USD. I paired this in my pc with a RX 570 4gb (overclocked) and it is perfect for games like bo3 and just cause 2 in 1080p.

I totally agree with you. But there's the issue. I do not care about game's running on high/ultra settings and that's the only benchmarks people are doing. If I could find a benchmark on lowest settings 1080p then maybe I could see more points from going budget to high end.

I agree with this, I wouldn’t even consider the 9600k.

If you are already hitting 144Hz most of the time, then upgrading the CPU won't get you much of an improvement most of the time assuming you are leaving vsync/gsync/adaptivesync on.

Here's another recommendation: the i5 6500, it's very similar to the i5 9600k but may need a slight overclock to get the must proformace. It's lga 1151 at 3.2ghz or 3.4ghz idk but the max overclock is 4.2ghz, (I think). But either way The gpu does have a great impact on fps most games, so for example, if you have a slow CPU, but a 300$+ gpu, it'll make a huge difference. Having a 50$+ to 100+ gpu with a i9 9900k is it going to make much diffirence in proformace.

No I am not hitting 144 all the time. Otherwise I wouldn'the be here. 144 in pubg is kinda impossible, in apex fps varies from 90-200 depending on places of the map and is really inconsistent when a lot of fighting is going on.

You do understand that would be a total waste of money to get old cpu/mobo combo for a minor upgrade?
