[SOLVED] What do I need for 1440p@165hz? GTX960?

I am not able to get 165hz at 1440p and after some research it seems like my old GTX 660 is the problem and not allowing me to set higher than 120hz at 1440p on my 165hz 1440p monitor (using DP). I was looking for the cheapest possible upgrade that would let me get the full 165hz at 1440p and found a used gtx 960 2GB cheap. Would this support the full 165hz at 1440p or would I need something even newer?
I am not concerned about the framerate, as I don't do anything graphics card heavy and I already get consistent 400 fps+ in the games I play.

Anyone knows?

A 2070S for instance, can run a 1440p monitor at 144 but I am not sure about 165. And its only capable of 100 in games. I know as I have both a 1440P monitor running at 144 on a 2070s

Minimum you need might be a 2080S but I would get a 30 series over a 20 now.

The average framerates I get from pretty much all AAA titles released in the last 5-6 years is 110fps. That is with everything maxed out in graphics @ 2560x1440p

So.e games are ~70fps, some are 144+.

Maybe you didn't see what I wrote in the end, but I am not concerned about running any games at at a high frame rate as I am not really a heavy gamer. I only play non intensive games(I already get 300-500 fps+ consistently on my old computer). And I just want to be able to set my monitor to 1440p at 165hz in Nvidia control panel. Right know it's limiting me to 120hz (I can't even set a custom resolution) using the original displayport cable (v1.4) and my old gtx 660. I believe it's a bandwidth problem, but from my research anything above DP 1.2 should support atleast 144hz and 1440p.

okay, I get where you coming from considering the games you play run 400fps on the 660, I will search harder as most results on Google assume you want best result, not just can it run it at all.

Regarding your problem, have you tried another cable? Or made sure your cable actually works properly?

I tried another cable that I had but it didn't make any difference. I'm using the original cabel that came with the monitor and is intended to be used so I'm assuming it supports the 1440p at 165hz. Only if I had access to any newer graphicscard I could find out if it's my old graphics card bandwidth that is limiting me to 120hz.

I have used 144hz at 1080p with this 660, and I'm sure it will support 165hz aswell if I had that. However for 1440p it doesn't seem to support anything more than 120hz. I'd image the higher resolution requires a lot more bandwidth and the displayport version on 660 is just too old. I might wan't to look at some cheap graphicscard from the 1000 serias.

OK so the GTX 660 has Displayport 1.2. It supports a maximum bandwidth of 17.28 Gbit/s. But the monitor needs a bandwidth of: 18.25 Gbit/s to run at 1440P 165Hz.

GTX 960 also only has displayport version 1.2.

if you want to run at 165 you need a newer gpu like a 1060 or something. That is just to run at 165, nothing to do with how good it looks.

660 only just isn't good enough, as isn't any 9 series card. It was 10 series that gets 1.4

GTX 960 will be able to support 1440p 165 Hz. This only requires DP 1.2 speed, DP1.4 is not required.

The GTX 660 is limited to 120 Hz because it does not support the full speed of DP 1.2, only 75% of the allowed maximum. The GTX 960 supports the full spec.
