this is my first comp where i've acutally gone and looked and choosen the parts which i've wanted. The comp im using now (an old P3...) was given to me by a family member, and its served me well, but its time for a new comp.

Give me your opinions on this comp.
Amd 3500+ S939 Venice core (should i get the 3800+ instead? how much of a performance upgrade is it?)
Gigabyte K8NF-9/ MSI Neo4 Platinum (which one is better becuase the msi one is lot more expensive, and what really are the advantages)
2x 512 3200 Kingston ram
segate 200gb sata 8mb
Gigabyte x300se 128mb (im going to get a better graphics card at teh end of the year, maybe a 6800gt or something along thoses lines)
LG 4163B dual layer DVDRW
Creative SBS 370
17" benqfp71e+ 8ms (i was going to get the 17" LG 1750SQ but then i heard that it doesnt have warrenty over dead pixels, this true?)
Antec Tx640B 400W/ Coolermaster CenturionV 380W (which case PSU is better, becuase the Antec has the ATX 2.0, but the coolermaster one is cheaper. Will the coolermaster case be good enough for this system?)

Also, this system will be sued for everything, from gaming through to work. The system probbaly won't get any upgrades or new parts, except for the graphics card at the end of the year.

Advice always appreciated

Well personally i would say get the 3000+ Venice core. It will save you some dough to buy a new GPU faster. The performance isn't noticeable if you just do office applications orsurf the web. Games it will matter slightly, but you can't game on that card anyway.

Get the 3000+, and that will save you 120bucks. Then take that plus what you were going to spend for a X300SE(about 50) and the gigabyte and you shouldn't have much further to go till you can get this

you are right (kind of) about the TFT warranty - since manufacturing TFT flat panels is quite complex, the occasional dead pizel is more common than you would think, so to keep costs down, there is a threshold of dead pixels (i think around 4, but that might depend on the manufacturer - there is an ISO dictating how many dead pixels there has to be before a monitor is considered DOA, I forget what its called) - any less than this is considered 'acceptable' by the manufacturer. There is a way around this however (in the UK at least) - we have distance selling regualtions that say if you are unhappy with a purchase made through the net or phone etc, you can send it back within 7 days of receipt - as long as its in the same condition as it arrived! So as long as you can keep the packaging MINT you might be OK to send it back if you discover a dead pixel or 2

The best way to find out would be to contact the manufacturer. It's worked for me. Whatever you decide, don't skimp on the PSU!

Yes you could get the Epox as wusy said, get the 3000+ and then get a good video card, the one that was suggested earlier looks very good.

Wusy what is wrong with the MSI. Everyone is saying always between the DFI and Epox. I have built 4 systems with the DFI LP NF4 and I think it is great, but I really liked the MSI Neo2 plat back in the day, and I am not willing to cancel out on the MSI until someone tells me why it isn't any good. It got the editors pick over at anand for the NF4 boards, and it seems to me that they are a pretty reputable source. Why do you feel that it isn't up to par?

I like the Antec case, builted one or 2 computer with it and my last one was the non TX version of it.
Its nice to work with and that Tp400W will nicely handle this rig with almost any video card.
I dont know about the CollerMaster...

HD, trye to grab a 7200.9 if you can, otherwise the 7200.8 is pretty solid(just bought the .8 and works great!)

Gigabyte K8NF-9/ MSI Neo4 Platinum
Very different board. I personally own a GA-K8NF-9 and I'm 98% satisfied with it, I had a few quirks with it that are now all fixed with BIOS updates, driver updates or software configuration (a couple of parameter to change from default to other value in the nForce NIC drivers). I recommend this board to anyone who wants a cheap/reliable/overclockable Socket939 board.

The MSI Neo4 is in another league, but I don't think it's worth the extra money. Unless you plan to go SLI in a near future or you really need the extra features of the MSI, the Gigabyte will be more than enough for all your need.

You should buy a 3000+/3200+ and overclock it to 3800+ speed. It's quite easy (only requires BIOS configuration). Save the money for a better GPU or a future upgrade to Athlon Dual-Core.

The X300se will make you suffer in games, think about it! The lowest recommended GPU for gaming is 6600GT or X700PRO (in my opinion). Anything lower than that is outdated or do not gives good enough performance in today's game to have a bright future.

I agree with the 3000+/3200+ recommendation and the saving for a better GPU, please keep in mind that gaming is all about the GPU. But I really want to hear someone that has tried out the MSI NF4 so if he has to be my guinea pig, then great... go for it, try the MSI NF4 (I'm actually just kidding, you might not want to spend the money if you don't think you would take advantage of the extras).

What does this mobo have that the other don't?
Say the Epox or DFIs.

Well, this review sumarises pretty good why I like the MSI board. Unfortunately I built 3 systems with DFI LP before I saw this review, otherwise I would have built at least one of those rigs on the MSI board. But basically if you read through this the DFI and MSI board come out pretty "neck and neck"... its a tough choice, and on this forum I think some people just have traditionally liked DFI so many just suggest it without considering the MSI board. I am just curious to see what its got.

One interesting part of this review is where they show the SATA 2 on the MSI board outperforming the SATA. Most people think that without SATA 2 drives you can't reap the rewards of a SATA 2 controller, but this would suggest that you can somewhat.

Ok, ok, stop giggling... very funny... here is the linky. (I'm starting to lose it in my old age)

I have learnt from the error of my peer... I do not wish to engage in any kind of "chit chat" between you and I... as I know the outcome can only end in discomfort for me... as such I will graciously decline all advances... *tucks tail and runs like a bat outta hell for the hills, never looking back*...

I like the integrated audio for the MSI, it hardly uses the CPU.
Is the non SLI MSI mobo (nforce 4 ultra) as good as this one?

lol, i never knew getting a comp needed so much work. What excatly are teh extra features, all i can gather is that teh ultra chipset has teh SN engine and teh SATA II thingys

or you couldve just checked the very first post in this thread

don't mind mozzy. All the fumes from the various melting components he has are clearly not good for his mind  . He'll wake up in a bit and remember where he is.

For my $0.02 though, I agree with suggestions to downgrade the CPU to afford a better graphics card. You probably wouldn't really notice any difference between the 3000+ and the 3500+, but you'll sure as shit notice the difference between the X300 and... anything really. And as someone mentioned, you can always overclock your CPU to 3800+ speeds, should you feel shortchanged in the CPU department later.

The non SLI is the same mobo... just different  (it is only missing SLi)
