What do you think of the AMD RX 480?

So the 480 has now been released and there's been tons of benchmarks. I myself was kinda disappointed because so many people overhyped the card. They had my expectations at 980 level. But turns out it's basically a cheaper 970. Don't get me wrong that's great because it performs similarly to the 970 at a way cheaper price. But I was kinda expecting a little more. I was hoping it would be at least a little better than the 970. So now the question remains, WHEN WILL THE 1070 PRICES DROP? Or is it worth buying the msi gtx 980 4gb for $319?

Yeah not very surprising. It is a 200 dollar card it performing like a 980 seems like wishful thinking. I am happy with it, $200 for 970 level performance more at higher resolutions seems like a good deal to me. Im interested to see how this will affect the price of the 970.

Yeah I agree.

This is a comment I posted in other topic: "it's true it was a bit over-hyped, a lot of people said it was going to beat a 980 and it's actually beaten itself by the 970 in some games. It's also true that it has a nice price for performance but maybe prices go down for NVIDIA now and next month 1060 is arriving so it will be a tight battle.";

Only idiots honesty thought it would match a 980.
Unlike the nvidia10** cards its dropped in the UK (the 4gb version) at a very very good pricepoint - £170 - roughly 30% cheaper than a budget model 970.

Good on amd for dictating the market price properly.

I'll admit, I was disappointed as well. A lot of articles I'd read beforehand had put the RX 480 on-par with the GTX 980, hard as that was to believe. Driver updates may improve performance somewhat, but that being the case, AMD should have had drivers ready to go when the card launched. This was a huge chance for AMD and I think they've missed it somewhat. The price/performance ratio is hard to argue against though.

The real test will come when Nvidia release the GTX 1060, supposedly next month. Given the capability of the GTX 1070 and 1080, it stands to reason that the 1060 will perform similarly to the GTX 980. If that holds true and Nvidia get the price right, I think AMD will have a tough time on their hands.

I totally agree with this.

I heard the 1060 will release in the fall sometime. Buy yeah I am very interested to see how that 1060 will perform and what they price it at.

So the 1060 being pushed up a month is actually real? And the leaked pics are real too?

It's said that's going to be released somewhere next month to be competitive against new AMD architechture.

I think AMD could have done better by making the card perform better than a 970 but better than a 980. So like in between if you know what I mean (rhymes lol). And if the price would be maybe starting at like $230 for 4 gb if they had done I between. I think they would be doing a lot better and match most people's expectations. But instead it was a little overhyped.

I'm torn between waiting for a RX 480 by a manufacturer or just getting a gtx 970 now. I know there is 4gb vs 8gb but I will be gaming at 1080p at 60hz.

The RX 480 is a little disappointing, hardly performing better than a 970 at higher temperatures, the only thing saving it is the price. But for me its a reference 480 8gb for £220 or something like Asus strix 970 4gb for £225.

Manufacturer 480s will cost more pushing it over the price of a 970.

Me personally would go for that 970 as it is a very good price and you already know how good it will perform, it's a pretty decent GPU for 1080p@60Hz.

Is the msi gtx 980 any good? I saw the price was only $319

Yes it is, if prices of 1070 wasn't so high I would rather go with this one, but 980 is a kick ass GPU.

Yeah. Man I hope these 1070 prices drop. Does that mean that all the other GPUs by NV will drop in price?

Theoretically they should.

I think theres too much criticism.
The 480 hits exactly where I thought it would personally,it was never going to match a 980,it was never supposed to - top of the mid-range is where its aimed & its hit that target firmly on the head imo.

the only thing thats surprised me is the uk pricepoint,I expected 200 quid+ for the 4gb & its way way less.
The 8gb model personally to me is a fairly worthless buy - this is a 1080p card plain & simple,4gb is enough & most likely always will be - 8gb is not worth the 20% price premium.

At the minute amd should have the low/mid range uk market completely sewn up if they can keep up with demand - there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to buy an nvidia card in the sub 200 pound price bracket.

really?

I would think most people that waited will just get a gtx 970 with a good aftermarket cooler

Welp i hope so

Well I hope so.
