What does 2133(OC) mean?

I'm building a new Gaming PC this winter, and I've picked out all the parts I need (some of which haven't even come out yet, like the R9 290x). I noticed that my motherboard says "2133(OC)/1866/1600/1333"
I ignored it before, but I don't want to have to build my PC with incompatible RAM.

I've already guessed that it meant overclock...

But what's that supposed to mean?

That the board has been tested and is approved to run 2133MHz ram which will mean it has to be overclocked to that speed since no CPU has native support for 2133MHz.

it just the motherboard vendor sales saving room on the mb and web posting. it just telling people that the mb can run ram from standard 1333 speed to 2100 ram. when the mb was built and sent out 2133 was the fastest ram built now ddr ram vendors are making 3000 speed ram. when i go buy a motherboard i look at the motherboard qal list for cpu and ram. these printed list on the mothrboard web page is a short list of known tested ram. some ram vendor also have a tested list.

It's complicated really. The CPU I'm planning on getting isn't out yet (I wanna get a Steamroller CPU), so the FX 8350 is a placeholder, until AMDs new CPUs are out. So I'm assuming that if AMDs older CPUs support 2133Mhz ram, it's new ones will too.

The amd a10-6800k does support 2133MHz ram, just so ya know. I know the newer high end steamrollers will as well. But yeah to answer the original question, when the mobo was released, it probably didn't know that the newer amds would natively support 2133. The OC tidbit means you would have to overclock the (older ones) cpu, which in turn overclocks the CPUs memory controller, which would allow support if it doesn't support it already.

To run the freq on the mobo it may require an OC of the CPU, mobos can run very high freq DRAM but the CPU will determine how high it can be run, i.e. plenty of AMD mobos can run 2133, but a stock 965 might run 1600 max, some up to 1866 with a OC, a 8350 is rated to 1866 at 1 stick per channel but when OCed might run 4 at 1866 or a pair at 2133, where thay can't at stock clock

Just out of curiosity, when do you think DDR4 will be out and do you think AMD CPUs/mobos will support it? . If it does come out I'm hoping to getting it around December-ish.

Last I saw looks like the end of the year/or 1st quarter of next year - AMD is up in the air, they don't really have any CPUs today that can run 2133+ their AMU market might move first, but who knows - I'm still waiting for AMD to add PCI-E 3 support to their mobos - I mean they've been making PCI-E 3 cards for quite some time - but no mobo support for it
