I know what part of this means, but need to know about all of it. I want to upgrade my memory module for my dell e510. I know I can get up to 4 gb, but not sure what I need to buy

512MB: RAM size, per stick
1Rx8: The number of memory modules per stick ("1" "R"ow of "8")
PC2: Semiconductor jargon meaning DDR2 (PC3 is DDR3), the type of RAM
4200: Speed grade, 533 MHz here, "U" refers to un-buffered memory
444: Timings, 4-4-4 (CL,tRCD,tRP)
12: CAS Latency (ns)

So the ram you have is: 512MB DDR2 @ 533 Mhz, 4-4-4-12

Your motherboard: a Dell WG261, LGA 775 Socket
NO Support for Core 2 Duos or Pentium D (i.e. no dual core options)

It has four 240-pin slots keyed for DDR2, at a maximum speed of 533 MHz, and a maximum size per DIMM (stick) of 1GB. Timings are negotiated by the mainboard.

In short, two sets of these dual channel modules would fit the bill:

If you are running Windows 7, it will struggle with only 512Mb of ram. A gigabyte would be O.K. and 2 would be my minimum for a decent experience.

My opinion is that the machine is probably not worth putting money into, considering the cost of DDR2, and the "era" that PC comes from. Intel's Netburst architecture (Pentium 4) was a complete failure. That's not to say it isn't capable of light use, but hugely better systems came out only months after the Pentium 4 was laid to rest.

If this is your only machine, you are better off saving for something with DDR3 and a true dual core or better (i.e. Core 2 Duo or better, modern i3), living with the 512Mb of ram until you can get something worth upgrading.

Just my opinion, but given 2/4GB of ram, the system you have may work just fine for you with Windows 7. If you are running XP, just save for a new system.

This site needs to remove those whole page ads that cover and move when trying to scroll and see page...freaking ridiculous couldn't even read anything or see video because of them...that's the reason I'm not coming back and probably others to
