What does a graphics driver do?

Well I was thinking of installing one of Nvidia's graphic drivers, but I can't understand what it is or why I would need one

installing the latest driver updates several things, including the display drivers, and the physx drivers

the drivers are what tell the operating system what the hardware is, and what it can do. W/O drivers, Windows wouldn't know that a piece of hardware is.

if your into PC gaming, updating the drivers is important. With each driver update, comes tweaks for recent video games that enhances their performance w/ your hardware
