What does a home server do differently

I was thinking that for home use all it could be used for is file storage, a print server and media streamer, but you can do all that with a NAS. Isn't a home server just an overpowered NAS with a different OS?
Just wondering if there were any other uses or benefits. (Apart from virtual machines)
 
How about programs? You can't run programs on a NAS other than perhaps the basic web services installed into it. You'd need more horsepower too, especially for large databases.

PC's/servers are multipurpose machines. The NAS performs a few basic functions.
