its a part for watercooling loop, if you are not water cooling you dont need it.

i guess to allow more liquid in a system and a way to self bleed air out of the loop and for maintenance.

The water cools everything a resevoir is to make sure the pump always has liquid to work with.

You do not want your pump to get dry
