Hi there compunovice,

I would advise you to back up the important data that is stored on the drive as soon as possible as it may be failing. After that, you can just test it with a brand specific(or a third party one) HDD testing tool. The results will show you the overall health status of the drive. If it has some bad sectors on it(or some other issue), you will eventually have to replace it.

Hope this will help,

Thank you for that advice. I have backed up most of my files. It boots up fines sometimes, and other times the bios can't detect it, and during the last diagnostic test some blocks couldn't be read. If I did a image back up of it's current state (when it boots normally) and restored it to another hard drive would it transfer those errors to the new drive? Are those applications and settings corrupt?

Hi there,

There is a chance to face some issues when cloning a failing drive(as you clone the corrupted data as well). This is why a clean install is always advisable. Though, if you have no issues with the new HDD(old one is cloned onto), I guess you can just continue using it.

I would examine the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo or HD Sentinel.

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors. I suspect that the raw numbers will be high, in which case you should replace the drive.

BTW, if you have trouble backing up one or two files, try Bad Block Copy for Windows:
