What does GTX 1080 mean?

I know it's a video card. And I understand the history like 1050, and 970. But why does every brand have the same name and number for the video card?

Intel and AMD don't use the same name and numbers for their processors. It doesn't make sense

They are all nvidia GPU's but sold by different people, there isn't a good analogy, but if you consider mobo's there are a set of Z170 mobo's from many manufacturers, they are all Z170's.
