What does Longevity is a Gaming Rig mean to you?

I know what the word longevity means... so don't go durpy town on me ^_^ However, I see people saying things like:

"If you want this computer to have longevity..."
"For more longevity...."
"[some part] will increase your longevity"

By longevity do they mean literally how long my computer will turn on and function fluidly before it because a heap of junk metal? Or how long it will keep up with games?

So if someone says, "Your rig will last about 5-6 years." Do they mean it will be trash in 5-6 years or that it will be "obsolete" in 5-6 years?

Most people say that in terms of performance. So using 5-6 years, in that time it likely wont be able to run games at good settings (More than low, or even launch)
Some rigs components will fail within that time, but mostly people refer to how long it can run games.

Mine only has a few years left in it, due to my aging processor, it soon cant keep up with games being released.

So if i build a computer today with a 5-6 year life, and a game with it... Will it struggle to run that same game in 5-6 years?

It wont struggle to run the same game.
Say you build a rig today to run watchdogs at ultra settings, 60FPS. Unless some hardware degrades, which is rare but it does happen, it will still run said game at 60fps ultra in 6 years.

But that rig might not be able to run next gen games that come out in 6 years.

It will run with the same performance as it does day 1. The games just get harder to run, which is where upgrading comes in. (Went from a 5450, to a 7750, to a 760)

Yes.
My 965 which is a 5 year old processor fits into the AM3+ socket, which the newer 8320 also fits into. Its fairly easy to upgrade. Clear drivers, drop in socket, update drivers, good to go. Same applies for ram, graphics, etc.

It's like my PS3. It will continue to run PS3 games for many more years, but in order to run the newer PS4 games, I will need to upgrade to a PS4.

Exactly, except unlike consoles you dont have to buy a new one!
