what does the power control slider on AMD overdrive do?

okay im new to amd as i used to be a nvidia user and i used the slider to 5% on power control and overclocked my gpu clock to 1145mhz on my sapphire R9 280x duel-x would this have harmed it but only tried it out for 5 mins but it did increase my fps in a benchmark im new to all this

It allows your card to consume more power than its stock TDP, you generally want to max the slider as then the card wont throttle itself to meet power constraints.
