What does the word "LAN" mean?

I have seen the word LAN a bit, but I don't quite understand what it means. And what does it have to do with Wireless Networking?

Local Area Network.. Uses Ethernet cables or Wireless to connect computers together in a network

It has nothing to do with wireless networking, but is the same as an Ethernet or LAN port.

Because when you are talking about A TECHNOLOGY, it typically doesn't live to itself, there are OTHER THINGS in it, or near it, and people will often mention those other terms to clarify context.
