looking to go from cable internet to fiber and using fiber to go to 3 other buildings creating a network. any suggestions on equipment needed? Single mode or multimode fiber? I know i will have to use media converters at each building. My biggest concern is which fiber to use and what type of switch to use between modem and out buildings. Also i want to use indoor/outdoor fiber to keep from having to make splices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Single mode fiber and the optics that run on them used to be extremely expensive compared to multimode. Lately though the costs are much closer.
I would go single mode because it allows you to run 10g if you really wanted to.
In any case if you are going to use any fiber other than simple patch cables you are going to have to pay someone terminate the fiber. None of the bulk fiber that is used to run between buildings has ends on it. Putting the ends on the fiber requires very special tools and a lot of skill/practice.
Because the connectors used in these fiber is very fragale I would have your contractor terminate them into a patch panel and the use a short patch cable to connect to the device. That way if you would damage a fiber it is only the short patch and you do not have to pay to have the guy come out and reterminate the fiber.
A media converter is just a 2 port switch with 1 fiber port and 1 copper port. You can use normal switches with optic interfaces on both ends if you want to.
Most switches run what are called SFP modules. You just buy the one to match your cable end type and your fiber type. Pretty much everything uses LC connectors now days.
